The integration of artificial intelligence into heavy industrial logistics took a practical step forward on October 23, as UnityStep AI commenced industrial trials at Rengo Co., Ltd.'s Tonegawa mill in Ibaraki, Japan. The deployment targets a chronic bottleneck in paperboard manufacturing: the physical management and dispatch of massive paperboard rolls.

Handling containerboard rolls requires specialized forklift equipment and precise spatial management. Misplaced inventory leads to excessive internal transport distances, redundant handling, and delayed truck loading. UnityStep AI addresses this by applying mathematical modeling and shipment forecasting to determine the optimal storage location for each roll the moment it comes off the production line.

The scale of the operation amplifies the potential efficiency gains. Rengo currently represents approximately 22% of Japanese containerboard production, holding the position of the second-largest manufacturer in the domestic market. The Tonegawa facility, which has been a cornerstone of Rengo's production network since 1961, provides a rigorous testing ground for the software's predictive capabilities.

By analyzing historical and incoming shipment data, the UnityStep AI platform minimizes unnecessary forklift travel and streamlines the staging process for outbound logistics. This reduction in loading times is particularly critical in the Japanese market, where structural labor shortages in the transport sector demand maximum efficiency at loading docks.

If the Tonegawa trial yields the expected reductions in operational friction, predictive storage models could become a standard requirement for high-volume paperboard mills seeking to protect their margins against rising logistics costs.
