JB Machinery scales down automated ink control with modular InkMate system
JB Machinery has launched InkMate, a compact and modular ink management system that automates temperature, pH, and viscosity for one to three color stations.
Anyone who has spent enough time on a corrugated plant floor knows that flexographic ink is a temperamental variable. As press speeds increase and ambient plant temperatures fluctuate throughout a shift, ink viscosity and pH inevitably drift. The result is a constant battle against color variation, increased waste, and the need for operators to manually intervene. Addressing this persistent operational headache, JB Machinery Inc. has officially launched InkMate, a compact, modular ink management system, unveiled today during the official What’s New program at Corrugated Week 2026.
Engineering for the reality of the plant floor
The premise behind InkMate is straightforward but highly effective: it takes the proven automated control architecture of JB Machinery’s flagship InKomand system and condenses it into a self-contained unit designed specifically for one to three color stations and top-print applications. By continuously monitoring and dosing, the system maintains ink temperatures within the optimal sweet spot of 18 to 22 degrees Celsius (66 to 74 degrees Fahrenheit).
Maintaining this strict thermal window is critical. When ink temperature remains flatlined, viscosity and pH stabilize naturally. This translates directly to consistent color density from the first sheet to the last, faster setups, and a significant reduction in wash-up times. For converters, the immediate return on investment comes from the reduction of material waste and the elimination of press stops previously required for manual ink adjustments.
Listening to converter feedback
The development of InkMate highlights a crucial trend in the corrugated machinery sector: the shift toward scalable automation. While full-press ink management systems are ideal for high-volume, multi-color graphics, not every converting line requires—or has the physical space for—a comprehensive installation.
According to Warren Bird, President of JB Machinery, the engineering of InkMate was a direct response to feedback from the field. Technicians working closely with plant personnel noted that many converters wanted precise ink management for specific applications, such as top-printing units, but were constrained by the physical footprint of existing equipment. InkMate bridges this gap, offering a "Set & Forget" single-point data entry system with save and recall capabilities, effectively removing the operator from the ink management equation.
Addressing the labor shortage through smart automation
Beyond print quality, the introduction of InkMate in 2026 speaks to the broader macroeconomic challenges facing the packaging industry. With skilled labor remaining scarce, converters are increasingly reliant on smart automation to maintain productivity. By automating temperature, pH, and viscosity dosing, JB Machinery allows plants to reallocate their operators to higher-value tasks rather than having them constantly monitor ink buckets.
The system's compact design also means it can be retrofitted into existing lines with minimal disruption, providing an accessible upgrade path for independent sheet plants and integrated facilities alike. As margins in the corrugated sector remain tight, technologies that incrementally reduce waste and maximize uptime without requiring massive capital overhauls are becoming the standard rather than the exception.
JB Machinery’s pragmatic approach to scaling down their flagship technology proves that sometimes the most effective innovations are those that adapt to the physical and operational constraints of the plant floor. As automation continues to strip away the manual variables of flexo printing, will the role of the press operator eventually shift entirely from craftsman to systems monitor?
