Sappi engineers fiber-level grease barrier for PFAS-free label stock

Sappi Europe introduces Parade Face Edge, an 80 g/m² label paper featuring fiber-integrated grease resistance to prevent edge wicking without using PFAS.

The European packaging sector is currently navigating the final stretch before the August 2026 Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) deadlines restricting per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food-contact materials. Right on cue, @Sappi Europe has introduced Parade Face Edge, an 80 g/m² semi-gloss face stock engineered specifically for self-adhesive labels exposed to oils and greases.

What makes this release technically significant is its approach to one of the most persistent headaches in label converting and brand presentation: edge wicking. Traditionally, grease-resistant labels rely heavily on a surface barrier coating. However, when a product like olive oil, a condiment, or an industrial lubricant runs down the side of a container, it bypasses the surface coating and enters through the exposed, die-cut edge of the label. The resulting capillary action pulls the oil into the paper matrix, ruining the label's appearance, legibility, and structural integrity.

Structural resistance over surface reliance

Sappi has addressed this vulnerability by embedding the grease resistance directly into the fiber structure of the paper itself, complementing the traditional surface coating. According to Jan Hasselblatt, Head of Sales Self-Adhesive Labels at Sappi Europe, this dual-barrier approach prevents oil from spreading through the paper matrix even if it breaches the cut edge.

Crucially for converters and brand owners adjusting to the 2026 regulatory landscape, Parade Face Edge achieves this performance without intentionally added PFAS, halogenated polymers, or waxes. It is fully approved for direct food contact, making it a viable drop-in replacement for legacy fluorochemical-treated labels across the food, cosmetics, and industrial lubricant sectors.

Converting performance and market readiness

On the production floor, the transition to PFAS-free alternatives often raises concerns about runnability and printability. Sappi has engineered this 80 g/m² one-side coated paper to maintain the high-speed processing characteristics expected from its broader Parade Face portfolio.

  • Print compatibility: The calendered semi-gloss surface supports flexographic, gravure, and offset printing.
  • Processing: The reverse side is treated for efficient lamination in self-adhesive constructions, supporting high-speed die-cutting and dispensing.
  • Sustainability credentials: The grade is supplied in reels with FSC Mix Credit and 100% PEFC-certified versions available, aligning with broader corporate sustainability targets.

By leveraging over a decade of barrier technology development from its flexible packaging division, Sappi is providing the self-adhesive label market with a practical, paper-based escape route from forever chemicals just as the regulatory window closes.

Integrating the barrier into the fiber mass rather than just the surface is a smart engineering pivot that solves a real-world dispensing flaw, proving that regulatory compliance can actually drive better product performance. Will other specialty paper mills follow this structural approach to barrier properties, or will surface coatings remain the default for less demanding applications?
