Billerud reinforces its transatlantic containerboard capacity with Escanaba upgrades and a lighter fluting generation
Billerud expands its North American packaging capabilities with modernization at the Escanaba mill while launching a new generation of high-strength fluting from Sweden.
The containerboard market is witnessing a strategic realignment as Billerud executes a dual-continent upgrade of its packaging capabilities. In a move that strengthens its position in both the North American and European markets, the company has simultaneously rolled out a new generation of its signature Billerud Flute and detailed significant operational upgrades at its Escanaba mill in Michigan.
The Escanaba modernization
The North American packaging sector requires flexibility in formats and basis weights, and Billerud is adapting its Escanaba facility to meet these demands. The recent upgrades center on the modernization of the winder and roll handling systems. This technical overhaul allows the mill to process larger formats and a wider range of grammages, directly addressing the needs of US converters looking for versatile containerboard supplies.
Beyond capacity and format flexibility, the Escanaba project includes a critical optimization of the heat recovery systems. By improving thermal efficiency, the mill significantly reduces its steam and overall energy consumption, aligning operational cost reductions with the industry's broader sustainability targets.
Gruvön's PM6 and the new Billerud Flute
Across the Atlantic, the Swedish Gruvön production site has completed a crucial upgrade to the headbox of its PM6 machine. This investment in fluid dynamics and fiber distribution technology has enabled the launch of the new generation of Billerud Flute. The advanced headbox provides superior control over fiber formation, which translates directly into significantly higher compression strength in the final corrugated board.
For converters and brand owners, this mechanical improvement offers a tangible advantage in lightweighting. Packaging tests confirm that solutions utilizing the new Billerud Flute can achieve weight reductions of up to 25% without compromising box performance or runnability on the corrugator. In demanding supply chains, particularly in heavy-duty and agricultural applications, this strength-to-weight ratio is a critical metric for reducing material costs and transport emissions.
The Evolution program timeline
These industrial advancements are part of a broader capital allocation strategy. Billerud confirmed that approximately SEK 500 million remains allocated under its Evolution program, scheduled for deployment through 2027. This remaining capital expenditure signals further optimization across its asset base as the company continues to balance high-performance material engineering with energy-efficient manufacturing.
