The transition from complex, multi-material packaging to fiber-based alternatives hinges on a single, critical technological frontier: functional barriers. On October 26, 2026, this challenge took center stage in India as JK Paper’s Central Pulp Mills in Songadh, in collaboration with global chemical supplier Archroma, executed a targeted technical session under its Knowledge Bridge Series. This initiative bypasses the usual announcements of capacity expansions or machine acquisitions, focusing instead on the chemical and structural engineering required to make paper perform like plastic.

The technical roadmap for paperization

The joint working sessions between the Indian paper giant and Archroma zeroed in on the exact friction points slowing down the paperization trend. To replace high-barrier flexible plastics or multi-layer boards, the base paper requires sophisticated chemical treatments that do not compromise its end-of-life recyclability.

The technical agenda addressed several critical areas for the future of packaging:

  • Barrier coating technologies: Developing water-based and repulpable coatings that provide resistance to moisture, grease, and oxygen.
  • Bio-based innovations: Shifting the chemical reliance from synthetic polymers to renewable, cellulose-compatible alternatives.
  • Functional enhancement: Improving the tensile strength and structural integrity of paper materials under demanding supply chain conditions.
  • Product stewardship and regulatory compliance: Navigating the increasingly stringent global food-contact regulations and end-of-life directives.

Strategic alignment in the Indian market

This collaboration is not an isolated event. Archroma has been steadily reinforcing its footprint in the region, having opened a Global Center of Innovation in Mumbai in late 2025 specifically dedicated to packaging technologies. By partnering directly with a primary producer like JK Paper at the mill level in Songadh, the chemical supplier ensures that its barrier formulations are tested and optimized for actual, large-scale production environments rather than just laboratory conditions.

For the broader packaging and converting industry, this type of upstream integration is essential. Converters cannot deliver high-performance, sustainable packaging to brand owners if the base substrate lacks the necessary functional foundation. The work being done by JK Paper and Archroma represents the necessary groundwork to unlock new applications for corrugated board and folding cartons, pushing fiber-based materials into segments previously dominated by complex polymers.
