The pulp industry has spent decades searching for ways to extract higher value from lignin, the massive co-product that traditionally ends up burned in recovery boilers to generate mill energy. The announcement made on October 27, 2026, by Stora Enso marks a turning point in this race. The Nordic company has partnered with Shanshan Technology to build a hard carbon demonstration line in Ningbo, China.

The purpose of this facility is to accelerate the industrialization of Lignode, the battery anode material developed by Stora Enso from wood lignin. By teaming up with an established industrial player like Shanshan Technology, the company aims to validate its product on a commercial scale, a critical step before considering larger capital investments.

For the pulp and paper sector, the move is highly strategic. This is not merely a foray into the automotive or energy storage markets, but the transformation of a pulp mill residual stream into a high-performance material. The lignin-based hard carbon is specifically targeted at sodium-ion batteries, an emerging technology that requires this type of carbon as an anode material and is gaining traction as a viable alternative to lithium-based systems.

From a technical standpoint, using dry lignin to manufacture Lignode offers operational advantages in battery cells, such as faster charging and discharging times and better performance at low temperatures. This allows the bio-based material to compete directly with fossil-based synthetic graphite, which currently dominates the market.

Although the demonstration line will be located in Asia to leverage the rapid technical development and industrial-scale validation offered by the Chinese battery ecosystem, Stora Enso's long-term ambition remains intact. The company maintains its goal to establish a large-scale production and supply chain in Europe. This step in Ningbo is ultimately the acid test to prove that the forestry industry can successfully transition from traditional fiber processing to becoming a key supplier of advanced materials for the energy transition.
