Sonoco industrial paper sales rise 5.2 percent as North American mill utilization hits 94 percent
Sonoco reported $646 million in Q3 2026 industrial paper packaging sales, driven by a 10% increase in North American URB volumes and 94% mill utilization.
The industrial paperboard sector continues to demonstrate structural resilience in a complex macroeconomic environment. Sonoco Products Company reported its third-quarter 2026 financial results, revealing a distinct divergence between its consumer and industrial divisions. While the broader company faced headwinds, the Industrial Paper Packaging segment posted a 5.2 percent year-over-year sales increase, reaching $646 million.
This top-line growth in the industrial segment was primarily driven by aggressive pricing strategies and robust operational execution in North America. The company successfully implemented a $60 per ton price increase for uncoated recycled board (URB), which helped offset higher-than-expected inflation in energy, freight, and raw materials. Operationally, the metrics reflect a tight and active market: North American URB trade ton sales surged by 10 percent compared to the same period last year, and regional mill utilization remained exceptionally strong at 94 percent.
Operational efficiency offsets margin pressures
Despite the revenue growth, the segment's operating profit experienced a slight contraction, falling to $88 million from $94 million in the third quarter of 2025. This margin compression underscores the severe cost pressures facing paper manufacturers in 2026, where even near-maximum capacity utilization and double-digit volume growth in key product lines like wire and cable reels—which saw a 12 percent sales increase—are required just to maintain profitability levels.
Sonoco CEO Howard Coker emphasized that productivity improvements remained a critical driver of performance during the quarter. The industrial segment's ability to maintain 94 percent utilization is particularly notable given the broader market volatility, indicating sustained underlying demand for core industrial packaging materials and converted products.
Broader corporate challenges
The strength of the industrial paper division served as a crucial counterbalance to difficulties in other areas of Sonoco's portfolio. Total company net sales for the third quarter of 2026 declined 4.2 percent to $2.04 billion. The Consumer Packaging segment, traditionally a reliable revenue engine, saw sales drop 2.9 percent to $1.4 billion, hampered by adverse weather conditions that negatively impacted crop yields and subsequent food can demand.
Furthermore, the company recorded a significant GAAP net loss of $732 million for the quarter, a stark contrast to the $123 million net income reported in Q3 2025, driven primarily by large accounting write-downs. In response to these broader structural challenges, executives announced plans to close two facilities in Europe to optimize the manufacturing footprint.
For the paper and corrugated industry, Sonoco's third-quarter performance highlights a clear trend for late 2026: industrial packaging demand remains robust and capable of absorbing necessary price hikes, provided manufacturers can maintain high mill utilization and relentless productivity improvements to combat persistent input cost inflation.
