Leadership Transition at Sappi North America

Sappi Limited has announced a significant leadership change for its North American operations. Effective January 1, 2027, Kirk Ross will assume the role of President and CEO of Sappi North America. Ross will succeed Mike Haws, who is set to retire in February 2027 after a 40-year career in the pulp and paper industry, including 14 years with Sappi and seven years at the helm of its North American division.

The transition comes at a pivotal time for the company, which has been actively repositioning its portfolio toward sustainable packaging solutions. Ross, currently serving as Vice President of Manufacturing for Sappi North America, brings nearly 30 years of industry experience to the role. His background includes a unique blend of technical, manufacturing, and commercial expertise, having held positions such as Director of Marketing and Brand Management, and Director of Research and Development.

The Strategic Importance of Project Elevate

Ross's appointment is closely tied to Sappi's strategic investments in the packaging sector. Notably, he served as Project Director for Project Elevate, a massive $500 million conversion and expansion of Paper Machine 2 (PM2) at the Somerset Mill in Maine. This project, which recently began delivering commercial product, doubled the machine's capacity to approximately 470,000 metric tons annually.

The upgraded PM2 focuses on producing high-performance solid bleached sulfate (SBS) paperboard, catering to the growing demand for folding cartons, food service board, and cups. This investment aligns with Sappi's broader "Thrive" strategy, emphasizing long-term growth in packaging and specialty papers while supporting the shift toward circular economy principles and sustainable, fiber-based alternatives to plastics.

Building on a Strong Foundation

Outgoing CEO Mike Haws leaves behind a legacy of resilience and strategic growth. Under his leadership, Sappi North America successfully integrated the Matane Pulp Mill, navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and achieved record profitability in 2021 and 2022. The seamless transition to Ross is expected to maintain this momentum, ensuring continuity in operations and strategic direction.

Steve Binnie, CEO of Sappi Limited, highlighted Ross's instrumental role in shaping the company's strategy and advancing investments in packaging. The move underscores Sappi's commitment to internal succession planning and organizational stability as it continues to adapt to evolving market demands in 2026 and beyond.

The appointment of Kirk Ross signals a clear continuation of Sappi's aggressive push into the high-value packaging segment, leveraging his direct experience with the company's most critical recent investments.
