PCA boosts third-quarter net income to 262 million dollars on full mill capacity
Packaging Corporation of America reported a Q3 2026 net income of USD 262.3 million and a 12.5% revenue increase, driven by full mill capacity and the Greif acquisition.
Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) has closed the third quarter of 2026 with a robust financial performance, reporting a net income of USD 262.3 million, or USD 2.93 per share. This represents a solid increase from the USD 226.9 million recorded in the same period of 2025. The growth was underpinned by a 12.5% year-on-year rise in net sales, which reached USD 2.60 billion, aligning closely with Wall Street expectations and demonstrating the company's pricing power in a complex macroeconomic environment.
Operational efficiency and the Greif acquisition impact
The core driver behind PCA's third-quarter profitability was its manufacturing execution. Chairman and CEO Mark W. Kowlzan confirmed that the company's containerboard mills operated at full capacity throughout the quarter. This high utilization rate was significantly bolstered by the successful implementation of production projects at the Jackson mill.
Furthermore, the integration of the recently acquired Greif operations has proven to be a strategic success. The Greif assets generated earnings of USD 0.13 per share in the third quarter of 2026, a stark turnaround from the USD 0.11 per share loss reported in the third quarter of 2025. This operational improvement highlights PCA's ability to absorb and optimize external assets within its highly integrated network, which currently boasts an integration rate above 90%.
Navigating cost headwinds and market dynamics
Despite the strong top-line growth, PCA faced persistent cost pressures. The company navigated significant headwinds from rising freight rates, increased costs for recycled fiber, and higher chemical expenses. Additionally, labor and general operating costs saw an uptick compared to the previous year.
Excluding special items, PCA's adjusted net income stood at USD 272 million, or USD 3.04 per share, beating analyst consensus estimates of USD 2.92. Adjusted EBITDA reached USD 577.2 million, yielding a margin of 22.2%. The legacy packaging business benefited heavily from favorable price and mix, which contributed an additional USD 0.79 per share, effectively offsetting the unfavorable corrugated products sales volume experienced during the period.
Outlook for the fourth quarter of 2026
Looking ahead, the containerboard market remains tight, and PCA has strategically reduced its export sales to prioritize domestic demand and maintain its high integration levels. For the fourth quarter of 2026, the company has guided for adjusted earnings of USD 2.81 per share. This projection accounts for the typical seasonal shifts in packaging demand and the ongoing management of input costs, positioning PCA to close the 2026 fiscal year on a stable operational footing.
