Clearwater Paper targets 400,000 tons of CUK demand with new Cypress Bend line
Clearwater Paper is finalizing customer trials for a new coated unbleached kraft (CUK) line at its Cypress Bend mill, targeting up to 30% of a 400,000-ton market.
Clearwater Paper is aggressively diversifying its paperboard portfolio to mitigate its exposure to the volatile solid bleached sulfate (SBS) market. During its third-quarter financial update on October 26, the company detailed its imminent entry into the coated unbleached kraft (CUK) segment, a strategic pivot centered on its Cypress Bend mill in Arkansas.
Management confirmed that customer trials for the new CUK grade are already underway and yielding positive initial feedback. The formal commercial launch is slated before the end of 2026.
Targeting the Independent Converter
The strategic math behind this move is highly specific. Clearwater estimates the addressable CUK demand among independent converters at 300,000 to 400,000 tons. Rather than merely testing the waters, the company aims to capture between 20% and 30% of this market segment.
To achieve this, Clearwater is taking a pragmatic capital approach. While a comprehensive industrial conversion to dedicate Cypress Bend entirely to CUK would require an estimated $60 million investment, the company is currently executing a significantly leaner alternative. By deploying $3 million to $5 million in targeted capital expenditures, Clearwater can establish a viable production footprint to serve independent packaging converters without overcommitting resources upfront.
Strategic Relief for Cypress Bend
This product diversification is critical for the Cypress Bend facility. Earlier in 2026, Clearwater was forced to halve production and reduce the mill's workforce by 20% due to severe oversupply in the SBS market. By engineering the mill to swing between SBS and CUK production, the company is building operational flexibility.
- Addressable Market: 300,000 - 400,000 tons of CUK.
- Target Market Share: 20% - 30% capture rate.
- Initial Investment: $3 million to $5 million for a low-cost capital alternative.
The CUK launch is part of a broader portfolio expansion that includes the recent introduction of Circa coated recycled board (CRB) in partnership with Greenpaper. By stepping into CUK—a grade that competes fiercely in folding carton and beverage carrier applications—Clearwater is positioning itself as a multi-substrate supplier, reducing its vulnerability to single-market downturns and offering independent converters a new domestic alternative.
