Financial relief for energy-intensive operations

On October 22, 2026, Arctic Paper confirmed a PLN 34.3 million financial injection for its Kostrzyn nad Odrą mill in Poland. The funds arrive as state compensation for indirect costs tied to emission allowances, which have heavily inflated electricity prices for energy-intensive industries across Europe. The company expects this capital to significantly bolster its fourth-quarter 2026 financial results, providing a direct bottom-line relief after a challenging operational year.

The European paper sector has spent the last few years battling severe cost pressures. Arctic Paper itself had to implement a 4 to 8 percent price hike across its fine paper grades earlier this year, effective June 2026, to defend margins against rising raw material, logistics, and energy expenses. Operating as Poland's largest offset paper producer with an annual capacity of around 280,000 tonnes, the Kostrzyn facility requires massive baseload power. The compensation mechanism acknowledges the structural disadvantage European mills face when carbon emission costs are passed through the grid by power generators.

Strategic energy transition

Arctic Paper has not solely relied on external compensation to manage its energy exposure. The group has actively diversified into energy generation, targeting 100 MW of renewable capacity by 2030, including significant solar investments at the Kostrzyn site. Furthermore, the company has integrated demand response technologies to balance the grid using its energy-intensive equipment.

However, until those internal energy pillars fully mature and stabilize the mill's operational expenditure, state-backed compensation for emission pass-throughs remains a critical lever. This PLN 34.3 million allocation ensures that the Kostrzyn mill can maintain its global competitiveness and production stability heading into the close of 2026.
