Apex Europe expands into lifecycle maintenance with new anilox cleaning service
Apex Europe has launched a multi-brand professional cleaning and inspection service for anilox rolls, aiming to reduce press downtime and substrate waste.
The flexographic and corrugated printing sectors have long grappled with a quiet efficiency killer: micro-contamination within anilox cells. Addressing this direct hit to press profitability, Apex Europe has officially launched Apex Cleaning Services this July 2026, marking a definitive shift in the company’s operational model from a component manufacturer to a full-lifecycle maintenance partner.
The new division offers a comprehensive cleaning, inspection, and condition assessment program for anilox rolls and sleeves. Crucially, the service is not restricted to Apex’s own hardware; it is available for anilox components from any manufacturer. This multi-brand approach signals a strategic move to capture a broader share of the pressroom maintenance ecosystem, positioning the company as a central pillar in print operation management.
Targeting the root cause of press downtime
In high-speed corrugated, label, and flexible packaging environments, the anilox roll functions as the heart of the press. As print resolutions have climbed to meet strict brand owner demands, anilox line screens have become increasingly fine. Modern cell geometries, while capable of delivering high-definition flexo quality, are inherently more susceptible to clogging from fast-drying water-based inks, UV curables, and advanced barrier coatings.
Even minor blockages in these microscopic ceramic cells can disrupt ink transfer and coating volumes, leading to severe color inconsistencies. Over time, partially clogged cells translate into extended setup times, elevated substrate waste, and unnecessary press stops—factors that heavily penalize margins in an era of tightening operational costs.
Christian Rieger, Technical Sales at Apex Europe, highlighted the disconnect between capital investments and daily maintenance. "Customers invest heavily in optimizing their print processes, but contaminated or damaged cells can quickly undermine those efforts," Rieger noted. "The performance of an anilox roll is only as good as its condition."
From reactive cleaning to predictive assessment
What differentiates the new Apex offering from standard third-party cleaning operations is the deep integration of technical diagnostics. Beyond merely restoring cell volumes using advanced cleaning methodologies, Apex technicians conduct a thorough evaluation of the roll's overall structural condition. This allows for the early identification of wear patterns, micro-scoring, or potential performance issues before they trigger a catastrophic print failure during a live commercial run.
Ruud van Cuijk, CEO of Apex International, framed the launch as a direct response to evolving market demands. "Our customers increasingly expect more than products," van Cuijk stated. "By bringing this service directly into the Apex portfolio, we're making it easier for customers to rely on a single trusted partner for every stage of the anilox lifecycle."
This development underscores a broader 2026 trend in the global converting industry: equipment and component suppliers expanding into predictive maintenance to guarantee the ROI of their hardware. For packaging converters, outsourcing complex maintenance to specialized OEMs reduces the burden on internal teams, standardizes print quality across different facilities, and aligns perfectly with corporate sustainability goals by structurally reducing production waste.
Transitioning from a hardware vendor to a full-lifecycle partner is a smart defensive and offensive play for Apex, directly addressing the root cause of many flexo quality complaints. Will converters increasingly outsource critical technical maintenance to OEMs, or will the push for self-sufficiency keep these operations in-house?
