The packaging industry’s relentless drive toward lightweighting has traditionally focused on the structural elements of the PET bottle—the neck, the body, and the base. Now, machinery manufacturer Sidel is extending this material reduction strategy to the decoration phase with the launch of EvoDECO Next, a new generation of roll-fed labeling equipment designed to handle partial labels at industrial speeds.

Historically, roll-fed labeling has been synonymous with full wraparound decoration. By re-engineering the architecture to support partial labels, Sidel allows beverage producers to expose more of the container's transparent PET and the product itself, turning the bottle's shape into a primary visual asset while drastically cutting plastic film consumption.

Material reduction through partial configuration

The core operational shift in the EvoDECO Next platform lies in its ability to apply smaller labels without compromising the high-speed stability required by high-volume bottling lines. Depending on the chosen format, the system supports 90-degree and 180-degree partial-label configurations.

According to Sidel's operational data, transitioning from a conventional wraparound label to a 90-degree partial label reduces the total label surface area by up to 75 percent. The 180-degree configuration yields a 50 percent reduction. In a high-volume production scenario modeled by the manufacturer, switching to a 90-degree label saved 208.4 tonnes of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) annually. This material reduction translates directly to the bottom line and sustainability metrics, cutting associated carbon emissions by 346 tonnes and generating approximately €723,000 in raw material savings per year.

Integrated architecture for high-speed stability

Handling partial labels on a roll-fed system introduces specific tension and transfer challenges. Rather than retrofitting an existing machine to accommodate shorter labels, Sidel engineered EvoDECO Next as a natively integrated platform. The system incorporates updated modules, including Cutter 2.0, a Smart Buffer, and a Smart Camera, ensuring that feeding, cutting, transfer, and quality control operate synchronously.

To further optimize line efficiency, the platform can be integrated with Sidel’s CoboREEL automated reel-management system. This addition provides up to 18 reels of autonomy, significantly reducing the need for manual operator intervention and embedding traceability directly into the labeling process.

As regulatory pressures and corporate sustainability targets force beverage brands to scrutinize every gram of plastic in their packaging portfolios, the ability to maintain premium brand positioning while stripping away up to three-quarters of the label material offers a pragmatic operational advantage. With EvoDECO Next, Sidel demonstrates that the next frontier in packaging optimization lies not just in the container, but in the systems that dress it.
