Bridging the Gap Between RSC and Wraparound Formats

The corrugated packaging sector has long wrestled with a persistent operational bottleneck: the downtime required to switch secondary packaging lines between different case formats. At PACK EXPO 2026, Schubert North America is addressing this friction directly with its Lightline Case Packer, a system engineered to alternate between Regular Slotted Cartons (RSC) and wraparound cases without the need for mechanical tooling.

For co-packers and converters operating in the United States, the ability to pivot quickly is no longer a luxury but a baseline requirement. The competitive gap in the contract packaging market is widening, driven by brand owners demanding both lower costs and higher flexibility. Historically, automated case packers forced manufacturers to choose between high-speed dedication to a single format or flexible systems that required hours of manual tooling adjustments. Schubert’s integration of an exchangeable magazine and toolless changeovers effectively collapses this downtime.

Modular Automation for Corrugated Flexibility

The Lightline platform is designed as a pre-configured, modular machine concept. Beyond corrugated RSC and wraparound cases, the system accommodates cartons, bottles, and bags, making it highly relevant for facilities handling diverse product portfolios. By standardizing the core robotic architecture, Schubert has managed to deliver a compact footprint that accelerates both installation and daily format transitions.

From a corrugated perspective, the dual capability is particularly strategic. Wraparound cases continue to gain traction due to their material efficiency and tight product fit, which minimizes transit damage. However, RSC remains the undisputed standard for general distribution. Allowing a single end-of-line asset to handle both structures seamlessly gives co-packers the agility to bid on a wider variety of contracts without investing in parallel packaging lines.

This technological rollout coincides with a significant expansion for the German-engineered machinery manufacturer in the US market. Celebrating 60 years of packaging automation, Schubert recently commissioned a new 45,000-square-foot North American headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, aimed at expediting regional customer service and deployment.

Ultimately, the Lightline Case Packer reflects a maturing approach to packaging automation. Rather than simply pushing for higher throughput speeds, the focus has shifted toward maximizing active production time through intelligent, toolless changeovers, offering a pragmatic solution to the daily realities of modern corrugated packaging operations.
