Heidelberg automates spot color production with the new ChromaStar series

Heidelberg launches the ChromaStar ink dispensing series for packaging printers, enabling just-in-time spot color production to cut inventory and CO2.

The packaging printing industry in 2026 continues to face a dual challenge: brand owners demand absolute color consistency across diverse substrates, while margin pressures dictate maximum press uptime. Historically, spot colors have been a notorious bottleneck. Manual ink mixing relies heavily on operator expertise, often leading to inconsistent results, excess inventory of part-filled cans, and significant substrate waste during press make-ready. By outsourcing custom ink preparation to external suppliers, converters face longer lead times and supply chain vulnerabilities.

To solve this operational inefficiency, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (@Heidelberg) launched its new ChromaStar ink dispensing system in July 2026. This modular platform essentially moves the ink kitchen directly into the print shop, enabling packaging converters to produce precise spot colors on demand and just in time (JIT).

A modular approach to ink kitchens

The ChromaStar series is structured around four models—X, S, M, and P—catering to operations of varying scales. The entry-level ChromaStar X guides operators through manual batch preparation using digital formulas. Moving up the automation scale, the compact ChromaStar S features 20 dosing heads and is optimized for operations requiring one to ten metric tons of spot color annually.

For more demanding industrial environments, the ChromaStar M is equipped with up to 32 dosing valves and can deliver a 25-kilogram mix from three components in just five minutes. At the top of the range, the ChromaStar P operates continuously from a queued list of required mixes, processing feeds from 20-kilogram or 200-kilogram drums. This flagship model automatically mixes, weighs, packs, and labels each batch, ensuring absolute traceability across the production line.

Workflow integration and sustainability impact

Hardware is only part of the equation. Heidelberg has tightly integrated the ChromaStar series into its digital ecosystem. The system works exclusively with the company’s Saphira inks—including conventional, UV, and low-migration formulations critical for food packaging compliance. It connects seamlessly to Saphira Cloud, Saphira Check, and Saphira Control, linking recipe formulation, precise dosing, and color control within a single digital workflow. A dedicated proof output allows for color-accurate communication before a single drop of ink touches the main press.

From a sustainability perspective, this just-in-time approach yields immediate environmental dividends. By mixing exactly what is needed for a specific run, print shops dramatically reduce residual ink waste and eliminate the need to stockpile specialized Pantone shades that might eventually expire. This reduction in physical inventory and material waste directly lowers the printing operation's Scope 3 CO₂ emissions.

Strategic positioning in the packaging market

This launch underscores Heidelberg's strategy to cement its role as an end-to-end system integrator for the packaging industry. Dr. David Schmedding, Chief Sales Officer at Heidelberg, noted that the ChromaStar series provides a highly integrated solution that simultaneously improves productivity, quality, and sustainability. The move also allows the German manufacturer to capture a larger share of the consumables market through its expanding lifecycle business model.

In an era where operational flexibility dictates profitability, giving carton and packaging printers total control over their ink logistics is a strategic advantage. The automated systems are currently available for customer demonstrations at the “Home of Print” facility in Wiesloch-Walldorf.

Bringing ink formulation in-house with highly automated, data-driven systems like ChromaStar transforms a traditional supply chain vulnerability into a competitive edge, boosting both sustainability and margins. Will the widespread adoption of smart ink kitchens eventually make outsourced pre-mixed spot colors obsolete in high-volume packaging?
