A New Route to Market for Flexo Technology

The integration of Edale into Canon’s global machinery portfolio is finally showing its teeth in the American market. Canon USA has officially secured its first direct sale of an Edale press, placing a LabelLine FL4p at New York Label & Box Works.

For those of us watching the flexographic and narrow-web space, this is much more than a standard equipment update. When Canon acquired the UK-based flexo manufacturer, the immediate question was how effectively the digital print giant could leverage its established US commercial platform to push conventional and hybrid flexo technology. This transaction provides a clear answer, signaling a new route to market that bypasses traditional third-party distribution channels in favor of direct, OEM-backed sales and support.

Deepening a Legacy Partnership

New York Label & Box Works is not a newcomer to the British manufacturer's engineering. The Long Island-based converter, operating since 1878, is adding the FL4p as its third Edale press. It joins a pair of FL5 in-line folding carton presses that the company installed back in 2021. The fact that a 148-year-old institution—one that prides itself on agile operations rooted in the Deming management philosophy—chose to deepen its reliance on Edale speaks volumes about the hardware's reliability.

The LabelLine FL4p itself is engineered specifically to change the economics of short-run flexographic label production. With web widths between 430mm and 570mm, the platform relies heavily on automation to slash job changeover times and minimize material waste. In a 2026 market where brand owners are demanding faster time-to-market and smaller, more targeted SKU batches, converters are often caught between the high running costs of legacy flexo and the speed limitations of pure digital. The FL4p bridges this gap by making short-run conventional printing financially viable again.

The Power of Local Support

The deal materialized shortly after the Loupe Americas 2026 exhibition in Chicago this past September, where the FL4p was demonstrated live on the Canon stand. This physical integration at a major trade show was a statement of intent from Canon, showcasing Edale not as a peripheral subsidiary, but as a core component of its wider label and packaging portfolio.

Steve Haedrich, CEO of New York Label & Box Works, pointed directly to this new corporate structure as a deciding factor. While the company already knew how Edale equipment performed in a rigorous production environment, Haedrich noted that Canon USA’s local relationship and support network provided the necessary confidence for this third investment. Having a global powerhouse backing the service and maintenance of the press removes one of the traditional hurdles European manufacturers face when scaling in North America.

Rob Brown, Edale’s sales and marketing director, rightly called this a crucial commercial milestone. Securing a repeat investment through a new corporate parent validates the acquisition strategy and sets a precedent for future US sales.

Canon’s ability to seamlessly blend its robust US support infrastructure with Edale’s specialized flexo engineering creates a formidable new competitor in the North American narrow-web market. Will this successful cross-pollination of digital support networks and conventional flexo hardware force other digital OEMs to rethink their hybrid market strategies?
