A strategic shift toward supplier-independent line integration

The packaging machinery sector has long operated on a predictable model: manufacturers build equipment and naturally prefer to integrate their own hardware into complete lines. On October 15, 2026, BW Packaging formally deviated from this traditional path with the launch of Perpetua, a dedicated automation and integration business unit designed to be strictly OEM-agnostic.

Introduced at PACK EXPO International in Chicago, Perpetua represents a strategic pivot for the Barry-Wehmiller company. Rather than serving primarily as a vehicle to sell more BW-branded filling, closing, labeling, or end-of-line equipment, the new unit operates independently to manage complex manufacturing integration projects across mixed-fleet production floors.

Addressing the reality of heterogeneous packaging facilities

The industrial reality driving this move is the heterogeneous nature of modern packaging facilities. Very few plants operate on a single-vendor architecture. When FMCG companies or contract packagers need to upgrade capacity, introduce new formats, or overhaul line controls, they face the friction of making disparate machines communicate. Perpetua targets this exact friction point. By adopting a supplier-independent model, the unit can specify and integrate the most appropriate technologies for a given project, regardless of the manufacturer.

Rachana Creeth, President of BW Packaging, framed the launch around the need for enduring value in a constantly shifting production environment. This requires an understanding of the entire operation rather than just the immediate technical specifications of a single machine. Eric Collier, the newly appointed Chief Automation and Integration Officer, leads the division with a mandate to establish operational goals before selecting the hardware or software architecture.

Physical and digital integration challenges

Integration at this scale involves both physical and digital constraints. On the physical side, it means managing conveyor geometry, product orientation, and accumulation space between machines of different origins. On the digital side, it requires harmonizing control systems so that machines can exchange availability signals, fault conditions, and recovery commands seamlessly.

By establishing Perpetua as a distinct entity alongside its traditional equipment manufacturing operations, BW Packaging is acknowledging that the future of packaging efficiency lies as much in the connective tissue between machines as in the machines themselves. It is a calculated move to capture value in the high-stakes arena of line integration, where the ability to make different brands work together is becoming a premium industrial service.
